5 Must-See Landmarks on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk

While the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk we know and love today officially opened in 2010, this oceanfront destination has a rich history dating back to the 1930’s.

Once a bustling promenade, Hurricane Hazel destroyed the original boardwalk in 1954. The 6.5 million dollar redesign took nearly nine months to build. Recently voted one of National Geographic’s top 10 U.S. boardwalks, it runs 1.2 miles along the oceanfront, from the 2nd Avenue Pier to the 14th Avenue Pier, and is dotted with shops, eateries, and attractions.

Although some things have changed, others remain the same. Here are five must-see landmarks on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk for both locals and visitors to enjoy!

The Gay Dolphin Gift Cove

A Myrtle Beach institution, this unique store has anchored the boardwalk since 1946, and is called the nation’s largest gift shop for a good reason. Standing at a whopping twenty six thousand square feet, the Gay Dolphin has seven levels of souvenirs, novelty items, and kitschy collectibles, and is a must-see!

Peaches Corner

Since 1937, Peaches Corner has been serving up traditional boardwalk fare, including foot-long hot dogs, juicy burgers, cheese fries, and hand-scooped ice cream favorites. Located at 9th Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, a Grand Strand vacation isn’t complete without a stop at this nostalgic eatery, and a stroll on the beach.

2nd Ave Pier House Restaurant

A day on the pier and playing in the surf can really work up an appetite! The 2nd Avenue Pier House Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a million-dollar view of the Atlantic Ocean. Options include savory sandwiches and salads, fresh seafood, and delicious steaks. Open daily; this establishment is located on the 2nd Avenue Pier, a Myrtle Beach fixture since 1936.

The Bowery

This world-famous oceanfront bar and restaurant has been a part of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk since 1944, and is one of the coolest places to go for live music. Called the “8th Wonder of the World,” The Bowery is considered the home of country super group Alabama, and has a unique place in music history.

The SkyWheel

The newest kid on the block, this 187-foot tall Ferris wheel opened in 2011, and features 42 glass-enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas. Each sits two to six people, and is fun for all ages. With breath-taking views of the ocean, this Myrtle Beach landmark is truly must-see and is hard to miss!
