How is North Myrtle Beach’s September Weather?

Wooden steps lead to a sandy path through coastal dunes and palm trees along the Grand Strand beach at North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

One of the best aspects of visiting North Myrtle Beach in September is the ability to enjoy the area’s warm, comfortable weather during a quieter time for the city, allowing you to enjoy all of the Grand Strand’s outdoor adventures and shopping with more freedom and time to explore and enjoy yourself. Daytime highs typically stay in the low to mid-80s, with temperatures falling into the mid to upper 60s at night. Cooler mornings are great for taking long walks on the beach with a cup of coffee; however, you should stay on the lookout for afternoon thunderstorms. September is also firmly within the area’s hurricane season, so be aware of forecasts and local cancellation policies.

Why Visit North Myrtle Beach in September?

Aside from the weather, the post-Labor Day season sees a decline in visitors to the area, leaving many of the area’s best attractions open to you and your group without feeling rushed. Along with more space on the beach, this is a great time to take advantage of shorter waits at restaurants. Even with smaller crowds on area beaches, the water remains warm enough to swim in, making September a great time to get the most out of outdoor fun with the fewest obstructions.

Spend a Day at the Beach

As we said before, space on the beach really opens up after Labor Day, and it is a perfect time to spend a full, quiet day on the sand. Walk over to Cherry Grove Pier for a stunning sunset and family-friendly fun along with the beach, or head over to Ocean Drive beach to enjoy this pedestrian-friendly shoreline. When you’re done, you can head over to the Horseshoe for some local shopping and dining.

Enjoy North Myrtle on the Water

One of the best experiences in North Myrtle Beach is the countless hours of fun right on the water! Kayak through the Cherry Grove salt marsh, taking you through calm marsh channels, giving you great sights of the undeveloped Waites Island, as well as wildlife like herons, egrets, crabs, and more. The grove is also known as one of the area’s best fishing spots, with species like bluefish, pompano, flounder, and king mackerel to be caught, depending on conditions.

Explore Beyond the Sand

Beyond the beach, North Myrtle Beach offers plenty of other outdoor experiences. September’s cooler weather makes it an ideal time to explore. Visit Heritage Shores Nature Preserve for some of the area’s best birdwatching. It’s seven acres of marshland that also offers excellent wildlife viewing. When you’re done, you can slow things down at Barefoot Landing and grab a bite to eat by the water in between browsing the shops. For something a bit more special, stop by Duplin Winery for delicious tastings, laid-back patio vibes, and plenty of wines to explore and shop for, to bring back to your rental to continue your celebration.
